The New York Knicks could have a hard time signing Klay Thompson in 2019.
It’s not a secret that the New York Knicks are positioning themselves for a free agent spending spree during the summer of 2019.
One of the players that the Knicks will have a chance to go after is Golden State Warriors’ sharp-shooter Klay Thompson.
But Thompson said this past week that he wants to play his entire career with the Warriors.
“I’ve always said that,” he told Mark Medina of the Bay Area News Group, via Bleacher Report. “Playing for one team your whole career is definitely special. Only so many guys have done it in professional sports, so it’ll be a goal of mine. Hopefully it all works out.”
This isn’t good news for the Knicks and their fans. Thompson even said prior to the start of this season that he would be open to taking a discount in order to stay with the Warriors.
But there is some hope for the Knicks. The Warriors currently have the highest payroll in the NBA, according to Hoops Hype, at $137.6 million. So they may not be able to afford to keep Thompson with their luxury tax set to sky rocket.
If the Knicks are able to pair Thompson up with Kristaps Porzingisit would certainly help them lure another big time superstar like Kawhi Leonard, who will also hit the open market during the summer of 2019.
If the Knicks can load up in 2019, they could finally find themselves in a position to make a title run.
