The New York Knicks need to figure out what they’re going to do with Willy Hernangomez.
With centers Enes Kanter and Kyle O’Quinn playing great for the New York Knicks this season, Willy Hernangomez hasn’t played much at all. He’s only played in one game over the past 11 games. Barring a trade or an injury, things won’t be changing anytime soon.
Hernangomez admits he’s struggling with his current role.
“It’s been really hard for me,’’ Hernangomez told the New York Post. “The only thing I know is I work hard every day and try to be ready when they need me. I’m glad to support teammates on the bench because we’re winning now. But it’s been really hard for me. I’ve played 15 games all season. It’s hard. But I’m working hard to be ready. I don’t like my situation. When I have the chance to be on court I’ll try to use it.’’
Marc Berman of The Post is reporting that the Knicks still believe Hernangomez is a part of their future, given the fact that he’s only 23 years-old.
According to sources, the Knicks still consider Hernangomez, 23, a part of the future. If this stretch of 16-of-20 games on the road tosses the Knicks out of the playoff picture, they certainly will step up their bid to trade O’Quinn at the deadline and open up playing time for the Spanish center who is Kristaps Porzingis’ best friend.
Hernangomez was asked if he wants to be traded before this year’s deadline.
“I want to play. I want to play. I really want to be here. I love New York. KP is here. But I want to play,” he replied.
“I’m young, it’s my second year. I have to play to get better. I’ve been working really hard every day. Everything I do I is 100 percent.”
With Joakim Noah now back, there is less incentive to play Hernangomez. I don’t see why the Knicks don’t have him play in the G League until they really need him.
It wouldn’t surprise me if New York is trying to trade O’Quinn in order to relieve some of the stress from their log jam at the center position.
